Castle Glen has always been environmentally conscious - developing and running a vineyard with organic practices - minimizing the risk to ourselves, our customers and the environment Castle Glen has always worked on ways to eliminate the nasty chemicals found in vineyards and preservatives in wine products today, as well as minimizing our footprint on the environment.

With renewed vigor and cashing in, well who doesn't want to be financially responsible, on the government's incentives to reduce carbon and reduce direct costs of manufacture, Castle Glen's efforts to tackle pollution are paying off. That's not to say that our delicious array of products aren't still as fabulous and tasty as ever, but we are leading the world along with a number of brew houses in Australia in cutting our pollution.

Castle Glen Cider - Spring 2013

A NEW Range of Ciders have sprung forth at Castle Glen.
Whilst Castle Glen has produced a Sparkling Apple Cider in the past we have ventured into a new line-up of Ciders.

Castle Glen has just released its first Pear Cider, Pineapple Cider, Peach Cider and Apple Cider for a refreshing Spring alternative to wine.

The Pear Cider has been hand crafted from tree ripened Packham and Boss Pears grown by a neighbouring farm. They also supplied us with beautiful Queen Peaches for the handcrafted Peach Cider. The Pineapple Cider has been fermented from ripened Pineapples grown at Blackbutt on the Sunshine Coast and the Apple Cider are from 50 year old Red Delicious Apples organically grown right here at Castle Glen.

Castle Glen’s new range of ciders are made from 100% fruit and are carbonated into the bottle for that natural thirst quenching sparkle. Consider any of our ciders with (and over) fruit salad, or you could flip the situation and drop a few berries or a slice of peach into your glass. Great for summery punch, sangria or even with a shot of fizzy Castle Glen Ginger Brew!

Pears

The cultivation of the pear in cool temperate climates extends to the remotest antiquity, and there is evidence of its use as a food since prehistoric times. Many traces of it have been found in the Swiss lake-dwellings. The word "pear", or its equivalent, occurs in all the Celtic languages, while in Slavic and other dialects, differing appellations, still referring to the same thing, are found—a diversity and multiplicity of nomenclature which led Alphonse de Candolle to infer a very ancient cultivation of the tree from the shores of the Caspian to those of the Atlantic.

The pear was also cultivated by the Romans, who ate the fruits raw or cooked, just like apples. Pliny's Natural History recommended stewing them with honey and noted three dozen varieties. The Roman cookbook attributed to Apicius, De re coquinaria, has a recipe for a spiced, stewed-pear patina, or soufflé.

A certain race of pears, with white down on the under surface of their leaves, is supposed to have originated from P. nivalis, and their fruit is chiefly used in France in the manufacture of perry - a pear wine and pear liqueur. Other small-fruited pears, distinguished by their early ripening and apple-like fruit, may be referred to as P. cordata, a species found wild in western France and southwestern England. Pears have been cultivated in China for approximately 3000 years.

Pears are among the most popular fruits in the world, and it's no wonder why! They are an excellent source of fiber and a good source of vitamin C for only 100 calories per serving. And, they're sodium free, fat free, and cholesterol free. That's a lot of nutrition in one sweet and juicy package!
